All Most Summer

How often have you looked in the mirror and told yourself you were going to lose those extra pounds. We have all been there five, ten, maybe twenty times. This is when you are tempted to tell yourself it didn’t work in the past so it is no use to try again. Don’t let yourself become overwhelmed. Sit down, take a deep breath, and think. Think of the steps you want to take in order to lose weight. Be specific with your goals. Write them down and take action on the steps needed to achieve those goals.

If you keep beating yourself up about failing to reach your goals take a different approach and focus on making new habits instead of reaching a goal. Some people have good success setting a limit of 30 days to change a bad habit into a good habit. You will still be setting a goal but you will be seeing results every 30 days. This plan allows you to see little changes along your way instead of being overwhelmed by how much weight you still need to lose. For example if you decide to break the habit of drinking sodas and you do so within thirty days you can be proud of yourself. Not only have you given up something that is unhealthy you have proven to yourself you can do it! The fact that a few pounds have gone away too is just a bonus. Now that your focus is on the habit and not the goal you will realize that losing weight requires lifestyle changes. And you are going to be able to make those changes simply by breaking bad habits. Encourage yourself by remembering summer is almost here.

Whichever method works for you it is important to be deliberate in the steps you take to get started. You may want to do both; work on changing habits and set goals. If you are setting goals write them down and plan them out. If you are making new habits write them down. Understand than weight is not gained in a day nor bad habits formed in a day. There is no diet or quick fix for shedding extra pounds or changing bad habits. Don’t expect overnight results. Work on your lifestyle changes every day and it will not be long before you notice you are making steady progress. It may be slow at first but slow progress is better than giving up. Slow, steady progress is what you need.

Think about this; what is your kryptonite. Because you have tried to break bad habits and lose weight and failed, it is important to know why you failed. Did you get sick and give up after a few days? Did your family go on a vacation and you say “why bother?” Maybe you just got bored? Educate yourself on the hurdles and kryptonite that made you unsuccessful and either avoid those pitfalls or develop methods to deal with them.

There is no way around the fact that you have to clean up your diet. Some of you will not believe this but 80% of your success when it comes to getting healthy will depend on your diet. Unless you are running marathons every day you cannot outrun your fork and you can’t out train a bad habit. We cannot stress the importance of this enough.
