A few of us have arrived early at the weekly coffee club meeting. By early we mean before Uncle Bud. That does not happen often but when it does we take advantage to share whatever we want because we all know when he shows up the subject will always float toward good health, losing weight, exercise, etc. But that is fine with us because, as we have shared before, he does his homework and has helpful information for us.
George is telling us he has finally reach the point that he has the desire to take off the 30 pounds his doctor has been telling him he needs to drop. Uncle Bud walks up just in time to hear him. And guess what is the first thing out of his mouth? He says, “Losing weight takes more than desire”.
As we take our seats Uncle Bud jumps right in with his explanation:
While it is great you have the desire to lose weight you must now make the commitment. The commitment involves being willing to make the lifestyle changes we talk about so often. Some people find it helpful to keep a food diary. Often we find out we are eating far more than we realized.
Be honest with yourself. That one donut may have actually been two. Seeing it in writing may help you to grab an apple next time instead of the donuts.
It is a good plan to have a partner that will hold you accountable. It may be easier to eat healthy if you know you will be sharing your daily intake with someone who cares and is encouraging you to develop a healthy lifestyle.
Set some short term goals. Be realistic with the goals. If you try to lose too much too fast you may become discouraged and give up. If you do lose several pounds quickly it is likely that you will “burn out” and lose your desire and commitment. It is better to lose one to two pounds a week and keep it off long term. By the way, this is true about your exercise also. It is better to walk a few minutes a day at first that to walk a couple of miles your first day and not feel like walking again for several days.
You can try to keep your commitment on your own but WeightoWellness is a wonderful place to go in order to get help from health care professionals. The staff there will help you set goals, plan meals and snacks, stick to an exercise program, and anything else you need to lose weight and become healthy. With their support you will find it easier to make the lifestyle changes you need. You will receive the support your need, the help sitting goals, and the encouragement you may need to stick to an exercise program. You will also have access to healthy recipes or you may want to use the snacks and meals they can supply you with.
As we begin to leave Uncle Bud tells George he is pleased he now has the desire to become healthier. We will all be here for him as he joins many of us in the journey to a better lifestyle.
