Make It a Priority

Make It a Priority (Weightowellness) 04/02/2016

Everyone should make physical activity a priority on their daily to do list. Now you may be asking yourself why it is such a big deal. It is a big deal because regular exercise and physical activity are important to the physical and mental health of almost everyone. Often we think of exercise and physical activity being something for children and young adults. It is just as important to continue being active as you age. Regular physical activity over long periods of time can produce long-term health benefits. This means we need to encourage children to form the habit of exercising daily and hopefully the habit will follow them throughout their lives. Regular physical activity over long periods of time can produce long-term health benefits. Many health experts say that older adults should be active every day to maintain their health.

While most people agree that exercise and physical activity can reduce the risk of developing some diseases and disabilities that develop as we grow older many of us continue to make excuses instead of giving just 30 minutes a day to an exercise program. Is 30 minutes out of our day to much to give? Of course not when we look at the benefits. In some cases, exercise may be an effective treatment for some chronic conditions. Studies have shown that people with arthritis, heart disease, and diabetes benefit from regular exercise. Regular exercise also helps people with high blood pressure, balance problems, or difficulty walking.

It is good to know that there are so many ways to be active. You can be active in short spurts throughout the day or you can have a specific time of day to exercise. You can go to a gym or you can take a brisk walk, rake leaves, walk the dog, or check out an exercise video from the library. What you decide to do to be active is not as important as actually being active.

Being active and exercising regularly can really change your life but do not overlook the fact that you must eat right too. A healthy diet is often overlooked in our fast pace world. Let’s face it, it is so tempting and easy to run by that “fast food” joint and grab lunch or dinner. If you do so often and it becomes a habit it may work against the good results you have achieved by being physically active. A healthy diet  and a good exercise program goes hand in hand helping you to become healthy or to maintain the good health you have.
