Type 2 Diabetes and Weight Loss [Updated 12/18]

If you have type 2 diabetes, being overweight can create even more problems for you. Exercise is an important part of your diabetes care, and you need to make it part of your daily routine. You do not need to get in the habit of making an excuse not to exercise every day. Regular exercise helps prevent health problems, keeps your weight down, and helps insulin work more effectively.

Make your program easier for yourself by finding activities that you actually enjoy doing. If you’re beginning to exercise after a long time off, start with something slow and easy. You can do things like walk your dog, work in your yard or garden, or join a walking group.

There are also small things you can do throughout your daily routine that will give you short bursts of added exercise. For instance, park your car as far away from the building you’re entering as possible. Leave your desk when you can and take short walks during the day. If you have a lot of phone calls to make, keep some hand weights close and lift them while you talk. Instead of running your car through a car wash, wash it yourself. Be creative with ways you can be active.

The most important part is to make “staying active” part of your daily routine. Activity can help with your blood sugar levels, as well as your stress levels and mood.

Try to keep a positive attitude. Concentrate on things you enjoy, and avoid negative thoughts as possible. Spend time doing things you enjoy such as listening to music, working on a favorite hobby, or being with friends. Have some fun every day. Laughter may help lower blood pressure and reduce stress hormones. Ensure you get plenty of sleep. Sleep loss can lead to weight gain and interfere with your body’s ability to respond to insulin.

Stress management is also necessary to successful weight loss alongside type 2 diabetes. Less stress can positively affect your blood sugar and insulin levels. We all have some kind of stress in our lives but some of us handle it better than others. Learn to look for signals of unusual stress and work to find ways to help you cope with the stress.

It is also important that you have a good support network. You need to surround yourself with people who are ready to help you meet your goals. At Weigh To Wellness, you’ll have just that!

If you need help following a healthy weight loss program, our clinic is here to provide you with all the support you need. We have a professional health care staff, including a staff doctor board certified with the American Board of Obesity Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine, that can help you with controlling your weight and type 2 diabetes.
