Are You Drinking Enough Water

Here we are again at the coffee club ready to listen to some of Uncle Bud’s advice on things we can do to improve our health. Today’s topic is a simple question. Are you drinking enough water? Seems most of us are not. Nor were we aware of all the ways water can help us.

Uncle Bud begins: If you are trying to lose weight you will be happy to know that water revs up your metabolism and helps you feel full. When you want to have a high calorie cola go for a glass of water instead. Drinking a glass of water before a meal may help you eat less. Drink ice water if you can because your body has to work to warm the water up there by burning a few more calories in the process.

We have just started listening to the lecture for today and already realize that most of us had no clue of how important water is for our bodies. But we are learning so much and we know Uncle Bud does his “homework” and will not lead us wrong. Next he asked us, “Did any of you know that a glass of water may be all you need for a little pick-me-up”? This is because feeling drained may be a hint to you are dehydrated.

WebMD reports that about 70 to 80% of your brain tissue is water. If you fail to drink plenty of water not only your body but your mind is stressed. When possible do not allow yourself to get thirsty. When you are thirsty you are already a little dehydrated. To help keep stress levels down keep a glass of water at your desk or carry a sports bottle with you and regularly take a sip.

Drinking water can help prevent muscle cramping as it lubricates the joints in your body. Water even helps build muscle tone. If you are well hydrated you may find that you can exercise longer without giving out.

Most of us were really surprised and pleased to find out that drinking plenty of water may help nourish the skin. Fine lines and wrinkles are deeper when the body is dehydrated. Yes, water is nature’s own beauty cream. So how does this work? Drinking water hydrates skin cells plumping them up making your face look younger.

If you have ever suffered the pain of a kidney stone you will be happy to know that water dilutes the salts and minerals in the urine that form the crystals known as kidney stones. Kidney stones can’t form in diluted urine. That information alone should encourage anyone who has had kidney stones in the past to drink more water.

Last but not least water helps the body stay regular. Just as fiber is important for good digestion so is water. Water helps dissolve waste particles making it easier to pass them through the digestive tract. But if you allow yourself to become dehydrated the body absorbs all the water. This leaves the colon dry making it difficult to pass waste.
