How To Keep The Weight Off While “Quarantining”

You’re stuck inside during this lockdown. Probably with snacks…if there are any left. Maybe you’ve been cooking more at home, but have you also been snacking more? What have you been snacking on? Are you lacking self-control or self-motivation? How are we supposed to keep the pounds off while quarantining? You know the drill- don’t eat too much, exercise multiple times a week, get enough sleep, so on and so forth. Let’s take a look at how to successfully tackle these goals, so we can stay on top of our weight loss progress while stuck at home in Birmingham, AL.

Smart Snacking

Studies have shown that snacking actually isn’t all that bad if you’re choosing the right snacks! Choose poorly, and you may notice weight gain and other “side effects”.

If you don’t have unhealthy snacks at your house, then you can’t eat them! Buy healthy snacks! Make sure to buy snacks that you know will fill you up, but that you still enjoy eating. Things with a good dose of dietary fiber or protein. Mixed nuts, boiled eggs, oatmeal, greek yogurt, and hummus are some good options. If you’re not a huge fan of raw vegetables and nuts, explore Pinterest or even Instagram for ideas on how to incorporate them into a snack “in disguise”. For example, cauliflower can be transformed into almost anything now it seems. Spinach can easily be added to a yummy fruit smoothie without you even noticing!

Try to exchange boxed and processed snacks for fresh produce. Consider the current situation, right now it may not be the best idea to go out to the grocery store multiple times a week for fresh foods, so keep in mind that frozen fruits and vegetables will work if you need to store things longer. Exercise

Gyms have been closed, which may be throwing off your fitness schedule or workout motivation. Make sure you’re getting exercise no matter what that looks like right now. If you’re able to safely go outside and workout, then enjoy some fresh air while jogging or biking. Click here to read more about the benefits of a daily walk; it truly makes a huge difference. If you have to stay inside, try to find an online workout or use whatever equipment you have. Maybe even workout and video chat with a friend for accountability.

Reduce Stress

Right now, many of us are dealing with financial stress, job stress, feelings of loneliness, and/or boredom. Stress’s impact on our bodies is very real. It may make you feel hungrier and/or eating may temporarily make you feel better. Maybe you’re snacking and eating out of boredom.  If you give in to the need to snack, choose healthy options (as stated previously). Take time to unwind, whether with a good book, a new hobby, a bubble bath, and/or yoga or stretching. If you’re home with family members, try to find time to yourself, even if that’s early in the morning or late at night. Reducing stress can reduce emotional eating, overeating, and bad snack options. Remember, this will end and you will be ok.
